GENE SOLE SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

Community based...
caring, encouraging and supporting young people
to see, to embrace and to engage the natural leader within them...
and in doing so, demonstrate positive character everyday.

Gene Sole, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC Retired

Gene Sole was a man of unquestionable character and integrity. His service to our country and community speaks for itself. Gene retired from the United States Marines, a highly decorated Lieutenant Colonel. He also had a distinguished career in the Lower Cape May School District where he served as a teacher, Vice Principal of Lower Cape May Regional High School, and finally as Principal of the Richard M. Teitelman Middle School. Gene was the Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #73. He coached Little League baseball and football in the Lower Township area and was the Assistant Soccer Coach at LCMRHS. He was a member of the Cape May City Volunteer Fire Company and Treasurer of the Cape May County Republican Party. Gene was a beacon of leadership, patriotism, and courage to the youth of Lower Cape May and the many Marines he commanded. He loved his family, friends, community, and country and always gave of himself and put others first. He truly led by example.

The Gene Sole Scholarship is a tribute to Gene and will honor those students that demonstrate Gene’s moral character and integrity through leadership and service to their community. Scholarship candidates must be pursuing an advanced education. They must demonstrate leadership, and be involved in community service and extracurricular activities, as well as maintain a GPA of at least a 2.75. They are also required to write an essay reflecting on a personal experience that has influenced their character and life.

MISSION

To summarize our mission statement above we aim to encourage the young people of our community to embrace their natural leadership ability and to demonstrate positive character every day. In recognition of these attributes the Gene Sole Scholarship Foundation intends to award scholarships annually to Lower Cape May Regional seniors that exemplify such character.

However, we feel strongly about encouraging good character at every age. We have sponsored and are available to sponsor character building programs and events at the elementary level. We also support a program at the Richard M. Teitelman Junior High School called SOLE to promote good character. SOLE is an acronym for Students Owning Leadership Everyday. Once a month students demonstrating character are selected and acknowledged with a t-shirt and then honored at a year-end luncheon featuring a guest speaker who exemplifies character.

One of our annual fund raisers is the Soleman 5K Run for Character and Memorial Walk. The words HONOR, INTEGRITY, RESPECT, SERVICE, and COMPASSION are printed on the back our race t-shirts. It is these traits that this scholarship embodies and wishes to not only support and encourage, but acknowledge and reward.

Since 2012, when we first established the Gene Sole Scholarship Fund, we are pleased to have allocated over $25,000 in scholarships and other non-profit endeavors pertaining to character. It is the generosity of our donors, sponsors and supporters that have enabled us to honor Gene’s memory and those that demonstrate his admirable character.
